How to Get Eco-Labels & Certifications in India: A Farmer's Readiness Guide : Part 1
Post 1 on this blog covered how to read eco-labels — NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production), Jaivik Bharat, PGS-India (Participatory Guarantee System – India) — as a shopper standing in front of a shelf. This post flips the lens: if you're a farmer or part of a grower group thinking about going organic, what do you actually need to do before you can apply for any of these labels?
Most guides online jump straight to "fill this form, pay this fee, book an inspection." That's the paperwork. This post covers the part before the paperwork — getting your land, your practices, and your records ready so the inspection actually passes.
This post uses a few recurring short forms — each is spelled out the first time it appears, and a full quick-reference glossary is included near the end. All sources used in this post are listed together at the very end, so nothing pulls you away from reading mid-post.
1. The 2–3 Year Conversion Period — What It Really Means
Under NPOP, the conversion period depends on your crop type. Annual and biennial crops — vegetables, grains, pulses, which is what most Indian farmers grow — need a minimum of 2 years of organic management before certification. Perennial crops (fruit trees, plantation crops) need 3 years, with the first harvest eligible for certification once that period is complete. Whichever applies to you, this stretch is called the "in-conversion" period — you're farming organically, but you can't yet label or sell your produce as certified organic.
That conversion wait — 2 to 3 years depending on what you grow — is the single biggest reason farmers hesitate. But there are three practical ways to work around it, shown above:
- PGS-India runs on a shorter clock. It only requires one year of documented transition, so farmers can start selling as PGS-certified while their NPOP conversion continues underneath. Many farmers stack both — PGS-India for early income, NPOP for long-term export or premium retail access.
- Joining an FPO (Farmer Producer Organization) that's already NPOP-certified gets your land into an established Grower Group Certification (GGC) structure faster — the group's Internal Control System (ICS) handles most day-to-day compliance checking, and the accredited Certification Body audits only a sample of members each year rather than inspecting every farmer individually.
- Informal evidence counts. Photographs, dated notes, or even bank statements showing you haven't purchased agrochemicals can serve as proof of an earlier start date — this has been known to shave 1-2 years off the wait when properly documented.
2. Soil & Water Readiness — Get Tested Before You Apply, Not After
Soil and water test reports are part of the application package itself — not something you scramble for once a certification body schedules your inspection. Two things NPOP standards specifically call out:
- pH must be actively maintained, not just checked once. NPOP text states desired soil pH levels shall be maintained by the producer, and accumulation of heavy metals or other pollutants must be prevented over time.
- Water quality matters just as much as soil. The water source used for irrigation is part of what a certification body reviews, and drainage patterns are checked to rule out contamination from upstream conventional farms.
- Buffer zones are mandatory, not optional. NPOP requires a buffer zone around organic plots sufficient to prevent unintended contact with prohibited substances drifting from neighboring conventional land — this is verified by the certification body at every annual inspection. In practice, buffer widths typically range from 3 to 20 metres depending on the contamination risk from the adjoining land, and crops grown within the buffer strip itself cannot be sold as organic even if farmed organically.
- Land history matters before you even test. Certification bodies ask for details of previous chemical usage on the plot going back several years — start collecting old input purchase bills or lease records now if you have them, since this feeds directly into your conversion period evidence from Section 1.
Practical tip: Most districts have a Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) offering subsidized or free soil testing — this is the cheapest way to get your baseline report before applying, and it also gives you a documented starting point that supports the "informal evidence" shortcut above.
3. Cost-Effective Nutrient Management — Building Soil Fertility Without a Fertilizer Bill
This section answers "how do I actually get my soil ready" instead of just "here's the rule."
Jeevamrutha recipe

Ferment for 5–7 days. Stir the mixture with a wooden stick in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions, twice daily (morning and evening) — this traditional stirring method helps aerate the mixture and is widely followed in jeevamrutha preparation. Once fermented, dilute and apply to soil around the root zone — one batch typically covers roughly one acre.
Research measuring nutrient content per litre of jeevamrutha found it delivers meaningful nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulphur, with buffalo-dung versions testing highest. Compare that to a 50kg bag of urea (₹350–400 at subsidized rates) or DAP (₹1,350+) — jeevamrutha isn't a full substitute for chemical fertilizer's concentrated nutrient load, but it costs a fraction of the price using inputs many farmers already have on hand, while also feeding soil microbial life that chemical fertilizer doesn't.
Panchagavya recipe
Panchagavya works alongside jeevamrutha rather than replacing it — jeevamrutha is primarily a soil microbial inoculant, while panchagavya doubles as a foliar growth stimulant that plants absorb through their leaves as well as their roots. It makes roughly 20 litres of concentrate:

Mix the cow dung and ghee first, and ferment for 3–4 days in a shaded, non-metal container. Add all remaining ingredients and let the mixture ferment for a further period, for roughly 15 days total, stirring twice daily throughout. To use, dilute at a 3% concentration — 3 litres of panchagavya per 100 litres of water — and apply as a foliar spray every 15–30 days, or as a soil drench. Field trials combining panchagavya with reduced chemical fertilizer doses recorded measurable gains in soil-available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Beejamrit recipe
Beejamrit is the seed-treatment counterpart to jeevamrutha — used to coat seeds before sowing rather than applied to soil. Research shows it introduces beneficial microorganisms that produce natural plant growth hormones and help shield young seedlings from soil-borne diseases. This batch treats roughly 100 kg of seed:

Tie the cow dung in a cloth and hang it in the water for up to 12 hours. Separately, dissolve the lime in 1 litre of water and let it rest overnight. The next morning, squeeze the dung bundle in the water three times to release its content, then mix in the lime water and the soil. Coat seeds in the mixture, dry them, and sow as usual. More low-cost soil fertility inputs
Beyond the three recipes above, a few more practices round out a low-cost soil fertility toolkit:
- Crop rotation & polyculture — a genuine two-for-one. This isn't just a pest-prevention technique; NPOP's own standard names crop rotation involving legumes and deep-rooted plants as a required soil fertility practice. Legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen for free. Alternating deep and shallow-rooted crops pulls nutrients from different soil depths instead of exhausting one layer. Intercropping (marigold with tomato, or maize with beans) adds a second income stream from the same plot while reducing pest pressure.
- For iron and micronutrient-deficient soil specifically: Vermicompost is the standard low-cost fix — studies on iron-deficient soils recorded substantial increases in available iron following vermicompost application, alongside gains in other micronutrients.
- Green manure crops (dhaincha and sunhemp) are another near-zero-cost nutrient source worth growing rather than buying. Dhaincha fixes an estimated 60–100 kg of atmospheric nitrogen per hectare and is ready to plough back into the soil in just 45–60 days, while also thriving in poor or saline soil where other crops struggle. Sunhemp offers similar fast-growing benefits and additionally helps suppress soil-borne diseases and nematodes. Both are typically grown in the off-season and ploughed in green, right before flowering, ahead of the main crop.
- Biofertilizers round out the low-cost toolkit: Rhizobium for nitrogen fixation in pulses, Azotobacter or Azospirillum for cereals and vegetables, and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) to unlock phosphorus already present in the soil. These are applied as a small seed or soil treatment and are inexpensive relative to their nutrient impact.
The readiness angle: Every input above should go into your farm diary with dates and quantities. This is exactly the kind of record a certification body inspector checks — it's not busywork, it's your evidence trail.
4. Natural Pest Control — Low-Cost, Traditional, and Certification-Safe
Neemastra is the closest thing to a free pesticide: neem leaves, cow urine, and cow dung, fermented for 48 hours. Beyond that:
- Neem Seed Kernel Extract (NSKE), neem oil, and neem cake — the three most common neem preparations, effective against over 300 insect species. Neem cake does double duty: it also feeds soil nitrogen and phosphorus while slowing nitrogen loss from the soil (see Section 3).
- Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and Trichoderma — biological agents targeting specific pests and soil pathogens without broad-spectrum harm.
- Companion planting and beneficial insects — marigold planted alongside tomatoes, basil planted alongside chilli, or maintaining habitat for ladybird beetles, cost nothing beyond initial setup and work continuously once established.(basil is commonly cited for repelling aphids and whiteflies that target chilli )
- Pheromone and sticky traps — low-cost, reusable, and permitted under organic standards since they don't involve any chemical contact with the crop. Pheromone traps lure specific pests like fruit moths using their own mating signals, while yellow or blue sticky cards catch flying pests such as whiteflies, aphids, and thrips, and also double as an early-warning monitoring tool so you can act before an infestation spreads. Traps typically cost as little as ₹10–75 per piece.
- Garlic and chili sprays — homemade botanical sprays made by steeping crushed garlic or hot chili in water, used to repel soft-bodied insects. Essentially free if you're already growing or buying these as kitchen staples.
The one thing that disqualifies you instantly: any prohibited synthetic pesticide contact, even accidental drift from a neighboring conventional farm. This is why buffer zones and documented input use matter as much as the natural methods themselves.
5. Documentation — The Unglamorous Part That Actually Gets You Certified
A simple farm diary is what turns "I've been farming organically" into "here's my proof." At minimum, it should capture:
- Inputs used — what you applied (or deliberately didn't), with dates and quantities
- Field activities — sowing, weeding, mulching, irrigation
- Harvest details — crop, quantity, date, and quality notes
- Sales records — what you sold, to whom, and when
- General observations — pest issues, weather events, soil changes
This is the single most under-discussed readiness step, and it's the one that costs nothing but consistency.
6. Choosing Your Path — Solo NPOP, FPO, or PGS-India

Expanded note: How joining an FPO actually speeds things up
Grower Group Certification (GGC) was introduced by NPOP in 2005 specifically to reduce the cost and complexity individual small farmers face. Groups certifying this way must run a mandatory Internal Control System (ICS) — an internal monitoring mechanism that conducts internal inspections of each farmer at least twice a year, while the accredited Certification Body then performs one annual audit based on a sampling plan, rather than inspecting every farmer individually every year.
This sampling-based model is what actually saves money and time: instead of each farmer separately paying ₹20,000–₹60,000 in first-year NPOP fees, inspection travel, and documentation help, the ICS spreads certification body costs across the whole group, and the group's internal inspectors — not each individual farmer — handle most day-to-day compliance checking.
Important caveat: joining an FPO does not shorten your land's own conversion period. The 2–3 year conversion requirement still applies to each farmer's specific plot. What the FPO/ICS structure speeds up is the administrative and cost burden of getting there — not the underlying requirement that your land itself has gone through organic practice.
For most small farmers just starting out, PGS-India is the practical entry point — fast, affordable, and it doesn't block a later move to NPOP.

Certification isn't really about the application form — it's about years of documented, verifiable organic practice. Everything in this post — jeevamrutha, crop rotation, neem-based pest control, your farm diary — is how you build that record cheaply and correctly from day one.
